Keep the shut-down production line in storage?
The first option is to do nothing. However, used production machines take up space, and a longer shutdown can lead to a deterioration in their technical condition. Some components may lose value over time. If you know you will no longer need them for your own production, it is more efficient to deal with another use as soon as possible.
Dismantling and disposal of the production line, or selling its parts?
Another option is dismantling the equipment and handing it over for disposal or recycling. With older or heavily damaged technology this may be a sensible solution. Disposal, however, is not always the best way to get rid of a line you no longer need.
Equipment you will no longer use in your company may still be valuable to someone else. Individual machines, electric motors, drives, control systems, switchboards, conveyors, hydraulic or pneumatic components or other parts of the technology may all be usable.
Before deciding on disposal, it is therefore worth finding out the market value of the individual parts as well as of the whole.
Selling the entire production line
Is your line functional? Selling it is a financially advantageous option. Another company may be looking for exactly this kind of technology as a cheaper alternative to buying new equipment, or as part of modernising its production.
A major advantage of this solution is that you do not sell your machines separately but as a functioning technological unit, which increases the overall value. It is also advantageous for the buyer, who can acquire equipment ready for further use.
Who to sell the production line to?
Selling a production line is a demanding process, both organisationally and technically. It is necessary to:
- find an interested party,
- assess the technical condition of the equipment,
- agree on a price,
- arrange dismantling, handling, loading and transport.

Options for using a non-functional production line
A non-functional production line does not automatically mean it is worthless. Even in the event of a fault, individual machines or components may have value. Control units, electrical and electronic components, drives, motors, switchboards or mechanical parts, for example, may be of interest.
With older equipment it also often happens that some components are no longer manufactured, yet they are still in demand. Before you decide to dispose of decommissioned technology, you should have it assessed.
An unwanted production line – sale or disposal?
An unused production line can have an economically advantageous use. Scrapping or long-term storage therefore need not be the first choice. It is worth first finding out whether the technology can be sold as a whole, or whether its individual parts have value. That can bring your company a financial return and at the same time free up space you can use for new technology or more efficient production.
